The
Bottle Cap

(Nov 2022 - Dec 2022)

I bought this water bottle and somehow its cap does not hold water from spilling out. Thus, I decided to design a bottle cap and use 3D printing to solve the problem.

Project Target

Research and Development

I want to design a product by myself starting from hand sketching to 3D modelling and finally 3D printing.

Problem Solving

I want to utilize my 3D modelling and Engineering knowledge to build stuff that can solve the daily problems I face.

3D Modelling

I want to practice my 2D/3D drawing and design, which may support me in my future career.

Steps

1. Hand Sketching

Sketched out every possible
design which suits critical criteria like
shape, ergonomic, and appealing.

2. 3D modelling

Used AutoCAD and SolidWorks to
build the 2D/3D model of the hand-
sketched design to have better view of
dimensions and visualization.

3. 3D printing

Used 3D printing technology to
print out the prototype of the Bottle
Cap to evaluate the accuracy of measurement.

4. Testing and Finishing

Made modification to the first design
and improved the ergonomic, inserting and
opening of the bottle cap.

The Beginning

I started by hand-sketched out all possible designs of the bottle cap. Some criteria that should include in the plan are the stopper to prevent falling and the lid holder to make it easier to grab.

The Process

After having a good idea of the shape that I want it to be, then I used measurement tool to measure the size of the lid, hole, and diameter. I did some estimation of the curve and tried to make it as close as possible in the 3D sketch.

The Result

Unfortunately, the first 3D prototype (black) does not fit the hole, the 2nd version fits but still has a little shaky, and the third version fits the hole perfectly since I add a rubber band to it.
Finally, it took me 3 times to figure out the perfect dimensions of the bottle cap and print out a 3D prototype. However, the project is worth my time, and I still use it as an accessory for my bottle.
